My Journey into the Aquatic World.
In December 2018, after a 15-year hiatus, I rediscovered my passion for aquarium-keeping. With my kids grown, I set up a new tank, complete with rainbow gravel, plastic plants, and ornaments. But, as I soon discovered, my creative itch wasn’t satisfied. I found myself rearranging the tank every weekend, searching for the perfect layout.
A turning point arrived when my angelfish laid eggs, prompting me to set up a breeding tank. However, the tank needed repairs, which led me to Jan Calitz and, subsequently, The Eastern Cape Aquarium and Aquascaping Club (ECAAC). Witnessing Jan’s stunning planted tanks and aquascapes was a revelation – I was forever changed.
Over the years, I experimented with various tank styles: dirted tanks, Walstad tanks, high-end scape tanks, breeding tanks, and Sulawesi tanks. But it wasn’t until I discovered ricefish and Medaka that I found my true passion. Enchanted by their unique breeding behavior and stunning colours, fin shapes and patterns, I began collecting different strains and attempting to breed them.
Medaka, although new to South Africa, have a significant following in Japan and parts of Europe. Inspired by Japanese breeding techniques, I’ve developed my own approach. I spend a vast amount of time doing extensive research, and I aim to one day create my own Medaka strains.
The success of my initial breeding endeavors sparked the idea for this website. My goal is to become the go-to expert for Medaka in South Africa. With the breeding season spanning late spring to early autumn, I’ll be resting my breeders over winter. To complement my Medaka and ricefish offerings, I’ll be introducing new items, including livestock, hardware, plants, and pond accessories and much more.
I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family, friends, and ECAAC for their unwavering support and encouragement.
