The Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a popular freshwater fish renowned for its peaceful temperament, hardiness, and adaptability. This species comes in a variety of colors and patterns, making it a favorite among aquarists of all experience levels. Mollies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming fry, and they thrive in community aquariums with proper care.

Natural Habitat

Native to Central and South America, Mollies are found in a wide range of habitats, from freshwater streams to brackish coastal waters. Their adaptability to varying salinity levels makes them unique among aquarium fish.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 40 liters for a small group; larger tanks are ideal for larger groups or mixed-species setups.
  • Water Temperature: 24–28°C.
  • pH Range: 7.0–8.5 (slightly alkaline water).
  • Water Hardness: 10–25 dGH (moderately hard to hard water).
  • Filtration: Moderate flow with efficient biological filtration to maintain water quality.

Aquascaping

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel.
  • Decor: Include driftwood, rocks, and caves for shelter.
  • Plants: Hardy plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, and Hornwort are ideal. Mollies also enjoy nibbling on algae-covered surfaces.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting enhances their vibrant colors.

Tank Mates

Mollies are peaceful and ideal for community tanks. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Other livebearers such as guppies, platys, and swordtails.
  • Peaceful schooling fish like tetras and rasboras.
  • Bottom-dwellers like Corydoras and snails.

Feeding

Mollies are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet:

  • Staple Foods: High-quality flakes or granules designed for livebearers.
  • Protein: Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
  • Vegetables: Blanched zucchini, spinach, or spirulina-based foods to meet their herbivorous needs.
Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions to avoid overfeeding.

Breeding

Mollies are prolific livebearers, making them an excellent choice for hobbyists interested in breeding.

Breeding Setup

  • A separate breeding tank with a temperature of 26–28°C and plenty of plant cover is recommended.
  • Females give birth to free-swimming fry every 4–6 weeks.

Fry Care

  • Feed fry with powdered fry food, infusoria, or freshly hatched brine shrimp.
  • Provide plenty of hiding spots using dense plants or breeding mats to protect fry from being eaten by adults.

Key Notes

  • Behavior: Mollies are social fish that thrive in groups of at least 4–6 individuals.
  • Maintenance: Regular water changes and stable parameters are essential for their health.
  • Adaptability: Mollies can tolerate brackish water conditions, which can be beneficial for their health and coloration.

The Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a versatile and low-maintenance species, perfect for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Its lively behavior, ease of care, and striking appearance make it a delightful addition to community aquariums.
