Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius xanthozona)

The Bumblebee Goby is a small, vibrant freshwater fish known for its striking black-and-yellow striped pattern, reminiscent of a bumblebee. Native to Southeast Asia, these fish inhabit brackish and freshwater environments. Despite their small size, Bumblebee Gobies are full of personality and make an excellent addition to species-specific or peaceful community tanks.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, Bumblebee Gobies are found in slow-moving or stagnant waters such as estuaries, mangroves, and tidal rivers. These habitats often feature soft, muddy substrates and a mix of freshwater and brackish conditions.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 liters for a small group (4–6 individuals).
  • Water Temperature: 24–28°C.
  • pH Range: 7.0–8.5 (slightly alkaline water).
  • Water Hardness: 10–20 dGH (moderately hard).
  • Salinity: Prefers brackish conditions (specific gravity 1.002–1.006), though some populations adapt to freshwater.
  • Filtration: Gentle flow with efficient biological filtration to maintain stable water quality.

Aquascaping

  • Substrate: Use fine sand to mimic their natural habitat and allow them to forage.
  • Decor: Add driftwood, rocks, and caves for hiding spots and territorial boundaries.
  • Plants: Include brackish-tolerant plants like Java Fern or Anubias.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient.

Tank Mates

Bumblebee Gobies are peaceful but may display minor territorial behavior toward conspecifics. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Small, peaceful species such as nerite snails or small livebearers like mollies.
  • Avoid aggressive or overly active fish that may outcompete them for food.

Feeding

Bumblebee Gobies are carnivorous and require a high-protein diet:

  • Live/Frozen Foods: Brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and mosquito larvae are ideal.
  • Prepared Foods: May accept small sinking pellets or micro-pellets, but live or frozen options are preferred.
Feed small portions 1–2 times daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom.

Behavior and Personality

  • Activity: Bumblebee Gobies are bottom-dwellers that enjoy exploring crevices and hiding spots.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept in small groups of at least 4–6 to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.
  • Territoriality: Mild territorial disputes may occur but are generally non-aggressive.

Breeding

Breeding Bumblebee Gobies in captivity is possible but requires specific conditions and patience.

Breeding Tank Setup

  • Use a separate breeding tank with soft sand and small caves or shells for egg-laying.
  • Maintain brackish water with a specific gravity of 1.005–1.008.

Spawning Process

  1. Males establish and defend a cave or shell.
  2. The female lays eggs inside the male’s territory.
  3. The male guards the eggs until they hatch, typically within 7–10 days.

Fry Care

  • Feed fry with infusoria or powdered fry food, transitioning to baby brine shrimp as they grow.

Key Notes

  • Water Maintenance: Regular water changes and stable salinity levels are crucial for their health.
  • Health: Monitor for stress and poor water conditions, as Bumblebee Gobies are sensitive to fluctuations.
  • Brackish Conditions: While some adapt to freshwater, a brackish environment is ideal for long-term health and vitality.

The Bumblebee Goby is a delightful and unique addition to brackish or specialized freshwater tanks. Its vibrant coloration, interactive behavior, and manageable size make it a favorite among hobbyists seeking something distinctive.
