Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae)

The Ember Tetra is a small, brightly colored freshwater fish that is highly popular among aquarists for its striking orange-red hue and peaceful temperament. Native to slow-moving rivers and streams in Brazil, this species is a delightful addition to any community aquarium.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically grows to 2 cm (0.8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: Vibrant orange to red body with semi-transparent fins.
  • Body Shape: Slim and elongated with a slightly rounded belly.

Behavior and Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Peaceful and shoaling. Best kept in groups of 6 or more, which enhances their natural behavior and reduces stress.
  • Tankmates: Compatible with other small, peaceful species like neon tetras, rasboras, dwarf corydoras, and shrimp. Avoid large or aggressive fish that may see them as prey.

Habitat Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22°C–28°C (72°F–82°F).
    • pH: 5.5–7.0.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately soft water (up to 10 dGH).
  • Substrate: Fine sand or gravel.
  • Environment:
    • Provide dense planting with floating plants to diffuse lighting.
    • Include driftwood, leaf litter, or rocks for a natural look and additional hiding spots.
    • Gentle water flow to mimic their natural habitat.

Diet:

  • Omnivorous: Enjoys a varied diet, including:
    • High-quality micro-pellets or flakes.
    • Live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms.
    • Occasional vegetable-based foods like spirulina flakes.

Care Tips:

  1. Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes, as they are sensitive to poor conditions.
  2. Use subdued lighting or floating plants to mimic their natural environment.
  3. Keep in well-planted aquariums to encourage their vibrant colors and reduce stress.

Breeding:

  • Reproduction: Egg scatterers; breeding can occur in densely planted tanks or separate breeding setups.
  • Setup: Use a breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop.
  • Egg Care: Remove the adults after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs. Eggs hatch in 24–36 hours, and fry become free-swimming within 4–5 days.

The Ember Tetra is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a pop of color and peaceful activity to their aquariums. Its small size, hardiness, and adaptability make it a perfect fit for nano tanks or planted community setups.
