The L047, scientifically named Baryancistrus chrysolomus, is commonly referred to as the Mango Pleco or Magnum Pleco. This species is known for its distinctive appearance and specific care requirements. Here’s a comprehensive overview:
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Can grow up to 30-35 cm (11.8-13.8 inches), making it larger than many other plecos.
Coloration: Features a dark brown to black body with vibrant yellow bands on the dorsal and caudal fins, sometimes with faint yellow spots on the body. Juveniles are particularly striking with their brighter colors.
Body Shape: Like other Loricariids, it has a flat, armored body with a wide head and elongated pectoral fins.
Behavior and Compatibility:
Temperament: Territorial, especially with other bottom-dwellers that occupy the same niche. Best kept singly unless in a very large tank with ample hiding places.
Tankmates: Suitable tankmates are those that inhabit the middle and upper water layers; think of peaceful characins or rheophilic cichlids. Avoid other large or aggressive bottom dwellers.
Social Behavior: Due to their territorial nature, keeping more than one in a standard-sized tank can lead to aggression. In large setups with plenty of visual barriers, small groups might be possible.
Habitat Requirements:
Tank Size: A minimum of 75 gallons for a single specimen; larger for multiple or if planning for breeding.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: Prefers warmer waters, 26°C – 30°C (78.8°F – 86°F).
pH: 6.0 – 7.5, slightly acidic to neutral.
Hardness: Soft to moderately soft water (3-10 dGH).
Substrate: Soft sand or smooth gravel, with numerous caves made from rocks or driftwood. They originate from highly oxygenated, fast-flowing waters, so strong water movement is crucial.
Diet:
Omnivorous: In the wild, they graze on aufwuchs, a biofilm containing small invertebrates:
In aquariums, they need a diet rich in vegetables but also require protein:
High-quality sinking algae wafers or vegetable-based foods.
Occasional treats of bloodworms, shrimp, or other meaty foods.
They are not effective algae eaters and will not control algae in the tank.
Care Tips:
Aquarium Setup: High oxygen levels and strong current are necessary to replicate their natural habitat in the Rio Xingu.
Lighting: Prefers dimmer conditions or areas with shade.
Water Quality: Sensitive to nitrates; regular water changes are critical.
Breeding:
Reproduction: Breeding is challenging but can be achieved:
Males select and defend a cave for spawning.
Conditions should mimic their natural environment with temperature fluctuations and strong water flow.
Eggs are laid in the cave, and males guard them. Fry care involves feeding them micro foods like baby brine shrimp.
The Mango Pleco (L047) is a magnificent fish that can be a centerpiece in a well-planned aquarium. Their need for specific conditions, particularly in terms of water flow and temperature, makes them more suited for experienced aquarists. Their territorial behavior and size also mean they require thoughtful tankmate selection and a spacious, well-decorated environment.
