  1. Santa Maria Endlers (Poecilia wingei) are a vibrant and hardy freshwater fish popular among aquarists for their striking colors and ease of care. They are a type of Endler’s Livebearer, closely related to guppies, and are highly sought after for their unique red, orange, and black patterns, reminiscent of a sunset. Here’s a detailed guide to Santa Maria Endlers:

Overview

  • Scientific Name: Poecilia wingei
  • Common Name: Santa Maria Endlers
  • Origin: South America (endemic to Venezuela)
  • Size: Males: 2-2.5 cm, Females: 3-4 cm
  • Lifespan: 2-3 years

Appearance

Males are smaller and more colorful, with vibrant orange and red hues contrasted by bold black markings. Females are larger and less colorful, typically displaying a plain silvery-grey tone, allowing the males’ stunning patterns to stand out.

Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons
  • Water Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F)
  • pH: 7.0-8.5
  • Hardness: Medium to hard water (10-20 dGH)
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel
  • Aquascaping: Heavily planted tanks with floating plants for cover and areas for open swimming

Behavior

Santa Maria Endlers are peaceful and active, making them ideal for community tanks. They thrive in groups of at least six to reduce stress and display natural schooling behavior. Males often court females, making them lively and entertaining to observe.

Diet

Santa Maria Endlers are omnivorous and accept a wide variety of foods:

  • Staple Diet: High-quality flake or pellet food
  • Supplements: Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms
  • Vegetation: Blanched spinach or spirulina-based food for balanced nutrition

Breeding

Breeding Santa Maria Endlers is straightforward, as they are livebearers.

  • Gestation Period: 20-30 days
  • Fry Care: Provide plenty of hiding spots with plants to protect the fry from adult fish. Feed fry powdered food or freshly hatched brine shrimp for optimal growth.

Tank Mates

Santa Maria Endlers are compatible with other peaceful species:

  • Neon Tetras
  • Corydoras Catfish
  • Small Rasboras
  • Shrimp and snails

Avoid housing them with aggressive or large fish that may view them as prey.

Care Tips

  • Perform regular water changes to maintain water quality.
  • Avoid overcrowding, as Santa Maria Endlers thrive in stable and well-maintained tanks.
  • Ensure males and females are balanced or keep an all-male group to prevent overbreeding.
