Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Grows to 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in length, depending on the species.
  • Coloration: Silvery, reflective body with occasional red or black markings on fins, particularly in males. Some varieties, like the Red Hook Silver Dollar (Myloplus rubripinnis), feature bright red accents.
  • Shape: Disc-shaped and laterally compressed, resembling a coin.

Behavior and Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social; thrives in groups of 5 or more.
  • Tankmates: Compatible with other large, peaceful fish like tetras, rainbowfish, Corydoras, and larger gouramis. Avoid housing with small fish that might be mistaken for food or aggressive species.
  • Social Behavior: Schooling fish; they display their best colors and behavior in groups.

Habitat Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 75 gallons for a group; larger tanks are required for adult fish to accommodate their size and active swimming habits.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 24°C–28°C (75°F–82°F).
    • pH: 6.0–7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (4–18 dGH).
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel.
  • Environment:
    • Provide plenty of open swimming areas.
    • Include driftwood and rocks for structure, as well as hardy plants (like Anubias or Java fern) or artificial plants, as Silver Dollars may nibble on delicate greenery.
    • Moderate water flow replicates their natural river habitats.

Diet:

  • Primarily Herbivorous:
    • Prefers plant-based foods like algae wafers, spirulina flakes, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, lettuce).
    • Can also accept pellets and flakes as staples.
    • Occasional treats of live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp can be offered but are not necessary.

Care Tips:

  1. Plant Protection: If live plants are desired, opt for hardy species or keep plants in protected areas of the tank.
  2. Schooling Behavior: Keep in groups to reduce stress and enhance their natural schooling activity.
  3. Water Quality: Maintain excellent filtration and regular water changes, as they are large fish that produce significant waste.

Breeding:

  • Reproduction: Egg scatterers; breeding occurs in pairs in large, well-maintained tanks.
  • Setup: Use a breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water and floating plants for egg attachment.
  • Egg Care: Remove adults after spawning to protect eggs. Eggs hatch in 3–5 days.
  • Fry Diet: Feed fry with infusoria or finely powdered fry food, transitioning to baby brine shrimp as they grow.

Why Choose Silver Dollars?

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Their shiny, reflective bodies add elegance to any tank.
  • Peaceful Nature: Great for large community setups.
  • Active and Social: Their schooling behavior creates dynamic movement in the aquarium.

The Silver Dollar Fish is a hardy, peaceful species that brings energy and beauty to aquariums. With proper care and a suitable tank size, these captivating fish can thrive and become a centerpiece in your aquatic community.
