Blue Keri/Blue Emperor Tetra (Inpaichthys kerri)

The Blue Keri or Blue Emperor Tetra is a stunning freshwater fish known for its shimmering blue coloration and peaceful nature. Native to Brazil, this schooling species is an excellent addition to community aquariums, bringing vibrancy and elegance to planted or nano setups. Its hardy nature and engaging behavior make it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Natural Habitat

Blue Emperor Tetras are found in slow-moving rivers and streams in Brazil. These waters are warm, soft, and slightly acidic, often surrounded by dense vegetation that provides ample cover and food sources.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 40 liters for a small group (6–8 individuals).
  • Water Temperature: 22–28°C.
  • pH Range: 5.5–7.5 (soft, slightly acidic water preferred).
  • Water Hardness: 2–12 dGH (soft to moderately hard water).
  • Filtration: Gentle to moderate flow, replicating their natural habitat.

Aquascaping

  • Substrate: Fine sand or gravel.
  • Plants: Include live plants like Anubias, Java Fern, Amazon Swords, and floating plants such as Duckweed or Salvinia to provide shade and security.
  • Decor: Add driftwood, rocks, and leaf litter to mimic their natural environment.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting enhances their iridescent blue coloration.

Tank Mates

Blue Emperor Tetras are peaceful and thrive in community tanks with similarly gentle species. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Small tetras, rasboras, and pencilfish.
  • Peaceful bottom-dwellers like Corydoras catfish or dwarf loaches.
  • Shrimp species like cherry shrimp or Amano shrimp.
Avoid: Aggressive or fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs or large cichlids.

Feeding

Blue Emperor Tetras are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet:

  • Staple Foods: High-quality micro-pellets or flakes formulated for small tropical fish.
  • Protein: Live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae.
  • Vegetable Matter: Include spirulina-based foods or blanched vegetables occasionally.
Feed small portions 1–2 times daily to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Behavior and Personality

  • Activity: Active swimmers that occupy the middle and upper levels of the tank.
  • Social Behavior: They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.
  • Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, making them excellent tank mates for a variety of species.

Breeding

Breeding Blue Emperor Tetras is achievable with the right conditions.

Sexing

  • Males: Brighter blue coloration and slightly more elongated fins.
  • Females: Slightly larger and rounder, especially when carrying eggs, with less vibrant coloration.

Breeding Tank Setup

  • A separate breeding tank of 20 liters with soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5) is recommended.
  • Include fine-leafed plants or spawning mops for egg-laying.
  • Maintain a temperature of 25–27°C.

Breeding Process

  1. Condition adults with live or frozen foods to encourage spawning.
  2. Males court females with vibrant displays and fin movements.
  3. Eggs are scattered among plants and hatch within 24–36 hours.

Fry Care

  • Feed fry infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
  • Transition to baby brine shrimp or finely powdered fry food as they grow.

Key Notes

  • Water Quality: Maintain pristine water conditions with regular water changes, as Blue Emperor Tetras are sensitive to fluctuations.
  • Behavior: They thrive in well-planted tanks with subdued lighting to mimic their natural habitat.
  • Group Size: Larger schools enhance their natural behavior and reduce stress.

The Blue Emperor Tetra (Inpaichthys kerri) is a visually stunning and low-maintenance fish that brings elegance and activity to freshwater aquariums. Its peaceful temperament, shimmering colors, and adaptability make it a favorite for community and planted setups alike.
