Borneo Suckers (Gastromyzon spp.)
Borneo Suckers, also known as Hillstream Loaches, are fascinating freshwater fish characterized by their flattened bodies and unique, sucker-like mouths adapted to fast-flowing streams. Native to the island of Borneo, these peaceful bottom-dwellers are well-suited to aquariums with high oxygen levels and strong water flow. Their unusual appearance and algae-grazing behavior make them a favorite among aquarists interested in biotope or specialized setups.
Natural Habitat
Borneo Suckers are found in fast-flowing streams and rivers in Borneo, where the water is cool, clear, and well-oxygenated. Their habitats feature rocky substrates and abundant algae growth, providing food and shelter.
Aquarium Care
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 60 liters for a small group (3–5 individuals).
- Water Temperature: 20–26°C.
- pH Range: 6.5–7.5.
- Water Hardness: 5–12 dGH (soft to moderately hard water).
- Filtration: Strong water flow and high oxygen levels are essential; a powerhead or river-style setup is recommended.
Aquascaping
- Substrate: Smooth gravel or sand.
- Decor: Include rounded rocks and driftwood to mimic their natural habitat and provide grazing surfaces.
- Plants: Hardy plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and mosses can withstand strong currents.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting encourages algae growth for natural grazing.
Tank Mates
Borneo Suckers are peaceful and compatible with similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Suitable tank mates include:
- Small schooling fish like white cloud minnows, danios, or rasboras.
- Shrimp species like Amano or cherry shrimp.
- Avoid large, aggressive, or slow-moving fish that may struggle in fast currents.
Feeding
Borneo Suckers are primarily algae grazers but benefit from a varied diet:
- Natural Diet: Biofilm and algae growing on rocks, driftwood, and tank surfaces.
- Supplementary Foods: High-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, or gel foods.
- Protein: Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms offered occasionally.
Feed small amounts once or twice daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom.
Behavior and Personality
- Activity: Borneo Suckers are active during the day, spending most of their time clinging to rocks and grazing on algae.
- Social Behavior: They are social fish and should be kept in groups of at least 3–5 individuals to encourage natural behavior.
- Adaptability: They prefer stable water conditions and may take time to acclimate to new environments.
Breeding
Breeding Borneo Suckers in captivity is rare but possible with proper conditions.
Sexing
- Males: Slightly slimmer with more pronounced pectoral fins.
- Females: Rounder bodies, especially when carrying eggs.
Breeding Setup
- Use a separate breeding tank with fast water flow, smooth rocks, and a temperature of around 22–24°C.
- Provide a well-oxygenated environment with plenty of grazing surfaces.
Spawning Process
- Males establish territories and court females.
- Eggs are laid in crevices or under rocks.
- Remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Fry Care
- Feed fry with biofilm, powdered spirulina, or infusoria until they are large enough to graze on algae.
Key Notes
- Water Quality: Maintain pristine water conditions with regular water changes, as Borneo Suckers are sensitive to poor quality.
- Oxygenation: Ensure high oxygen levels and adequate surface agitation, replicating their natural fast-flowing environment.
- Algae Grazers: They require a well-established tank with algae or biofilm for natural feeding.
Borneo Suckers (Gastromyzon spp.) are captivating and unique fish ideal for aquarists who can replicate their specialized habitat. Their peaceful demeanor, fascinating behavior, and algae-cleaning abilities make them a delightful addition to river-style or community aquariums.
