The Maculata Rasbora, commonly known as the Dwarf Rasbora, is a vibrant and tiny freshwater fish, admired for its bright red-orange coloration and striking black markings. Native to Southeast Asia, this peaceful and active species thrives in nano aquariums and heavily planted tanks. Its small size and schooling behavior make it an excellent choice for aquarists who appreciate delicate, colorful fish.
Natural Habitat
Maculata Rasboras are found in slow-moving streams, peat swamps, and forest pools across Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. These environments are typically acidic, with soft water and dense vegetation providing plenty of cover.
Aquarium Care
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 20 liters for a group of 6–8 individuals.
- Water Temperature: 22–28°C.
- pH Range: 4.0–6.5 (soft, acidic water preferred).
- Water Hardness: 1–8 dGH (very soft to soft water).
- Filtration: Gentle flow; sponge filters or low-flow external filters work best to mimic their natural habitat.
Aquascaping
- Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel.
- Decor: Include driftwood, leaf litter, and rocks to create hiding spots and a natural aesthetic.
- Plants: Heavily planted tanks with species like Java Moss, Anubias, and floating plants such as Duckweed or Salvinia provide shade and mimic their native environment.
- Lighting: Dim to moderate lighting reduces stress and highlights their vibrant colors.
Tank Mates
Maculata Rasboras are peaceful and do well in nano or community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive species. Suitable tank mates include:
- Small rasboras like chili rasboras or emerald dwarf rasboras.
- Small tetras, pygmy Corydoras, or shrimp species.
Avoid: Larger, fast-moving, or aggressive fish that may intimidate or prey on them.
Feeding
Maculata Rasboras are micropredators and require a high-protein diet:
- Staple Foods: High-quality micro-pellets or finely crushed flakes suitable for small fish.
- Live/Frozen Foods: Brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and microworms.
- Feeding Frequency: Offer small portions 1–2 times daily, ensuring all fish can feed.
Behavior and Personality
- Activity: Active swimmers that primarily occupy the mid and upper levels of the tank.
- Social Behavior: Schooling fish that thrive in groups of at least 6–8, displaying natural behaviors and reducing stress.
- Temperament: Peaceful and shy, preferring densely planted tanks for security.
Breeding
Breeding Maculata Rasboras in captivity is achievable with proper conditions.
Sexing
- Males: More vibrant red coloration and slimmer bodies.
- Females: Rounder bodies, especially when carrying eggs, with slightly duller colors.
Breeding Tank Setup
- Use a separate breeding tank of at least 10 liters with soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–5.5).
- Provide fine-leafed plants like Java Moss or spawning mops for egg deposition.
Breeding Process
- Condition adults with live or frozen foods to trigger spawning.
- Males court females by displaying vibrant colors and fin movements.
- Eggs are scattered among plants or substrate and hatch within 24–36 hours.
Fry Care
- Feed fry infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
- Transition to baby brine shrimp or powdered fry food as they grow.
Key Notes
- Behavior: Maculata Rasboras are shy and benefit from a heavily planted tank with subdued lighting to feel secure.
- Water Quality: Regular water changes and stable conditions are crucial, as they are sensitive to poor water quality.
- Group Size: Keeping them in larger groups enhances their schooling behavior and reduces stress.
The Maculata Rasbora (Boraras maculatus) is a stunning, tiny fish that brings vibrant color and energy to nano and planted aquariums. Its peaceful nature, manageable size, and captivating behavior make it a perfect choice for aquarists looking to create a serene and visually appealing aquatic environment.
