Papua Orange Dotted Black Snail (Notopala sp.)

The Papua Orange Dotted Black Snail is a striking freshwater snail species originating from Papua New Guinea. Known for its bold black shell adorned with orange spots, this snail adds a unique visual element to aquariums while serving as an effective tank cleaner.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically grows up to 3–4 cm in diameter.
  • Shell: A deep black shell with vivid orange spots arranged in irregular patterns.
  • Body: Soft, dark-colored body with a muscular foot for movement and adhesion to surfaces.

Behavior and Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Peaceful and solitary but can coexist with other snails and non-aggressive tankmates.
  • Activity: Active day and night, often seen grazing on algae or scavenging for food.
  • Tankmates: Suitable with peaceful fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid housing with snail-eating species like loaches or puffers.

Habitat Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 liters (5 gallons) for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22°C–28°C (72°F–82°F).
    • pH: 7.0–8.5.
    • Hardness: Moderate to hard water to support shell health.
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel is ideal.
  • Environment: Provide rocks, driftwood, and aquatic plants for grazing surfaces and natural hiding spots.

Diet:

  • Omnivorous: Feeds on algae, biofilm, and detritus.
  • Supplemental Feeding: Include:
    • Algae wafers
    • Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, or cucumber)
    • Calcium-rich snail pellets or supplements to promote shell health.

Care Tips:

  1. Ensure calcium availability in the water to maintain a healthy shell.
  2. Avoid copper-based medications, as they are toxic to snails.
  3. Maintain good water quality with stable parameters to prevent stress or health issues.

Breeding:

  • Reproduction: These snails are dioecious (separate sexes). Breeding occurs in well-maintained aquariums with appropriate water conditions.
  • Eggs: Females lay eggs on hard surfaces or decor, which hatch into miniature snails.

The Papua Orange Dotted Black Snail is an excellent addition to planted aquariums, where it contributes to algae control and enhances biodiversity. Its vibrant coloration and beneficial tank-cleaning behavior make it a favorite among aquarists.
