Sparkling Gourami (Trichopsis pumila)

The Sparkling Gourami, also known as the Pygmy Gourami, is a tiny and enchanting freshwater fish known for its iridescent coloration and unique ability to produce croaking sounds during interactions. Native to Southeast Asia, this labyrinth fish thrives in heavily planted aquariums with calm waters. Its peaceful nature and manageable size make it an excellent choice for nano or community tanks.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, Sparkling Gouramis inhabit slow-moving or stagnant waters such as rice paddies, ponds, and marshes in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. These environments are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, with dense aquatic vegetation.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 liters for a small group (3–4 individuals).
  • Water Temperature: 24–28°C.
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5.
  • Water Hardness: 2–10 dGH (soft to slightly hard water).
  • Filtration: Gentle flow is essential, as they prefer calm waters.

Aquascaping

  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel.
  • Decor: Include driftwood, caves, and leaf litter to mimic their natural habitat and provide hiding spots.
  • Plants: Dense planting with species like Java Moss, Anubias, Cryptocoryne, and floating plants like Duckweed or Salvinia provides shade and cover.
  • Lighting: Moderate to subdued lighting reduces stress and enhances their shimmering colors.

Tank Mates

Sparkling Gouramis are peaceful and best suited for nano or community tanks with similarly gentle species. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Small schooling fish like ember tetras, chili rasboras, or celestial pearl danios.
  • Peaceful bottom-dwellers like pygmy Corydoras or small shrimp.
Avoid: Large or aggressive species that may outcompete or stress them.

Feeding

Sparkling Gouramis are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet:

  • Staple Foods: High-quality micro-pellets or flakes suitable for small fish.
  • Protein: Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
  • Vegetable Matter: Offer blanched zucchini or spirulina-based foods occasionally.
Feed 1–2 times daily, ensuring food is appropriately sized for their small mouths.

Behavior and Personality

  • Activity: Sparkling Gouramis are active but enjoy spending time in shaded or sheltered areas.
  • Social Behavior: They are social fish and do well in small groups of 3–6 individuals.
  • Unique Trait: Sparkling Gouramis can produce audible croaking or clicking sounds during courtship or interactions, adding to their charm.
  • Labyrinth Fish: They can breathe atmospheric air using their labyrinth organ, allowing them to thrive in oxygen-poor environments.

Breeding

Breeding Sparkling Gouramis is achievable in a well-prepared environment.

Sexing

  • Males: Slightly brighter coloration and longer, more pointed fins.
  • Females: Rounder body, especially when carrying eggs.

Breeding Tank Setup

  • Use a separate breeding tank of at least 10 liters with calm, warm water (26–28°C).
  • Provide floating plants or bubble-nesting platforms for the male to construct his nest.

Breeding Process

  1. The male builds a bubble nest at the water’s surface.
  2. After courtship, the female lays eggs, which the male fertilizes and places in the nest.
  3. The male guards the nest and tends to the eggs until they hatch, usually within 24–36 hours.

Fry Care

  • Feed fry with infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
  • Gradually transition to baby brine shrimp or finely crushed flakes as they grow.

Key Notes

  • Behavior: Sparkling Gouramis are shy and may take time to adapt to new environments. Provide plenty of hiding spots to help them feel secure.
  • Water Maintenance: Regular water changes and stable parameters are essential for their health.
  • Health: Watch for stress-related illnesses like ich or fin rot, which can occur in poor water conditions.

The Sparkling Gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is a delightful addition to nano or planted aquariums, combining beauty, unique behaviors, and a peaceful demeanor. Their manageable size, stunning appearance, and fascinating traits make them a favorite for aquarists of all experience levels.
