Albino Halfbeak (Dermogenys pusilla “Albino”)

The Albino Halfbeak is a captivating variant of the Halfbeak fish, known for its delicate appearance and unique body structure. Its albino coloration, characterized by a pale white body with pink or red eyes, adds elegance to any freshwater aquarium. As a surface-dwelling livebearer, the Albino Halfbeak is both a visual delight and an intriguing species to observe.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Grows up to 6–7 cm (2.5–3 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: Pale, semi-translucent body with reddish-pink eyes, typical of albino traits.
  • Body Shape: Slim and elongated with an extended lower jaw, giving it a “halfbeak” appearance.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males are generally smaller and slimmer, with a modified anal fin (gonopodium) for reproduction, while females are larger with a rounder abdomen.

Behavior and Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Peaceful but skittish; prefers the company of its own kind and does well in small groups.
  • Tankmates: Suitable for community tanks with peaceful species like small rasboras, tetras, and guppies. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
  • Social Behavior: Shoaling fish that are most comfortable when kept in groups of 5 or more.

Habitat Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22°C–28°C (72°F–82°F).
    • pH: 6.5–7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (5–15 dGH).
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel.
  • Environment:
    • Surface-dwelling species; ensure open swimming areas at the top of the tank.
    • Floating plants provide cover and reduce stress from bright lighting.
    • Gentle water flow to mimic their natural habitat.

Diet:

  • Carnivorous: Prefers live or frozen foods like:
    • Daphnia
    • Brine shrimp
    • Mosquito larvae
  • Can be trained to accept high-quality flakes or micro-pellets, but live foods enhance health and coloration.

Care Tips:

  1. Ensure a secure tank lid, as they are known to jump.
  2. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises near the tank, as Halfbeaks can be skittish.
  3. Maintain stable water conditions to reduce stress and prevent health issues.

Breeding:

  • Reproduction: Livebearers; females give birth to free-swimming fry.
  • Setup: A breeding tank with plenty of floating plants is recommended to provide cover for fry.
  • Gestation: About 6–8 weeks, with 10–30 fry born per batch.
  • Fry Care: Feed with infusoria, baby brine shrimp, or powdered fry food.

The Albino Halfbeak is a unique and delicate species that thrives in a peaceful, well-maintained aquarium. With its striking appearance and intriguing surface-dwelling behavior, it makes a fascinating addition to any community or species-specific setup.
