The Pygmy Corydoras is a diminutive and charming species of freshwater catfish, loved for its active schooling behavior and peaceful temperament. Native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of the Madeira River basin in Brazil, this species is ideal for nano and community aquariums. Unlike other Corydoras species that stick to the substrate, the Pygmy Corydoras spends much of its time swimming in the mid-water column, making it a fascinating addition to any setup.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, Corydoras pygmaeus is found in shallow, soft-water streams with sandy substrates and dense vegetation. These waters are typically warm, acidic, and slow-moving, providing plenty of cover and foraging opportunities.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 40 liters for a group of 6–8 individuals.
  • Water Temperature: 22–28°C.
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5.
  • Water Hardness: 1–8 dGH (soft to slightly soft water).
  • Filtration: Gentle flow with efficient filtration to maintain water quality.

Aquascaping

  • Use fine sand or smooth gravel as substrate to protect their delicate barbels.
  • Add driftwood, smooth rocks, and leaf litter to mimic their natural environment.
  • Include live plants such as Java Moss, Cryptocoryne, and Dwarf Hairgrass for cover and grazing areas.
  • Maintain moderate lighting to create a calm atmosphere.

Tank Mates

  • Ideal for peaceful nano or community tanks. Suitable tank mates include:
    • Small fish such as neon tetras, ember tetras, chili rasboras, or celestial pearl danios.
    • Peaceful invertebrates like dwarf shrimp or snails.
  • Avoid larger or aggressive fish that might intimidate or eat them.

Feeding

Pygmy Corydoras are omnivorous and require a varied diet for optimal health:

  • Staple Foods: Micro-pellets or high-quality sinking granules.
  • Protein: Live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and microworms.
  • Vegetable Matter: Finely blanched zucchini or spinach occasionally.
Feed once or twice daily in small portions, ensuring food reaches the bottom.

Breeding

Breeding Corydoras pygmaeus is relatively straightforward with proper conditions and care.

Breeding Tank Setup

  • Use a small breeding tank of 20–30 liters with soft, slightly acidic water:
    • Temperature: 24–26°C.
    • pH: 6.0–7.0.
  • Provide fine-leaved plants like Java Moss or spawning mops for egg deposition.

Spawning Process

  1. Condition the adults with a protein-rich diet, including live or frozen foods.
  2. Perform cooler water changes (by 2–3°C) to simulate rainy season conditions and trigger spawning.
  3. The female will lay adhesive eggs on plant leaves, glass, or decorations, which the male fertilizes.
  4. Remove adults after spawning to protect the eggs.

Fry Care

  • Eggs hatch in 3–4 days.
  • Feed fry infusoria, vinegar eels, or powdered fry food initially.
  • Transition to baby brine shrimp as they grow.

Key Notes

  • Behavior: Pygmy Corydoras are highly social and should be kept in groups of at least 6–8, though larger schools are better to observe natural behavior.
  • Activity: They often swim in the mid-water column in addition to foraging at the bottom, unlike most Corydoras.
  • Water Maintenance: Perform frequent water changes to maintain pristine, stable conditions.
  • Health: Watch for signs of stress or poor water quality, which can lead to illnesses such as fin rot or ich.

The Pygmy Corydoras is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a lively, social species to their nano or community tank. Its playful demeanor, small size, and adaptability make it a delightful addition for hobbyists of all experience levels.
