Horn Snails (Clithon corona)

The Horn Snail, also known as the Spiked Nerite Snail or Clithon corona, is a small and uniquely shaped freshwater snail prized for its decorative shell adorned with horn-like projections. Native to Southeast Asia, this peaceful species is an excellent addition to aquariums, known for its algae-eating abilities and compatibility with a wide variety of tank mates. Its colorful shell variations and functionality make it both practical and visually appealing.

Natural Habitat

Horn Snails are found in slow-moving rivers, estuaries, and streams across Southeast Asia. These habitats typically feature soft, sandy substrates and warm, slightly brackish to freshwater conditions with plenty of biofilm and algae for grazing.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 liters for 1–2 snails; larger tanks for groups.
  • Water Temperature: 22–28°C.
  • pH Range: 7.0–8.5 (neutral to alkaline water).
  • Water Hardness: 8–20 dGH (moderately hard to hard water).
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel to protect their soft bodies while they graze.

Aquascaping

  • Plants: Live plants like Java Moss, Anubias, and Vallisneria provide cover and contribute to the biofilm.
  • Decor: Add smooth rocks, driftwood, and other hard surfaces for algae growth.
  • Lighting: Moderate to high lighting encourages algae growth, which serves as their primary food source.

Filtration

A gentle to moderate flow is preferred to mimic their natural environment. Maintain high water quality with regular water changes to avoid ammonia or nitrite spikes, as Horn Snails are sensitive to poor water conditions.

Feeding

Horn Snails are excellent algae grazers but may require supplementation in tanks with limited algae:

  • Natural Diet: Biofilm and algae growing on rocks, plants, and glass.
  • Supplementary Foods:
    • Algae wafers or spirulina-based pellets.
    • Blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or cucumber.
    • Calcium-rich foods to promote healthy shell growth.
  • Feeding Frequency: Offer supplementary food every 2–3 days if natural algae is insufficient.

Behavior and Personality

  • Activity: Horn Snails are active throughout the day, grazing on surfaces and moving slowly.
  • Social Behavior: They are peaceful and can be kept singly or in groups.
  • Unique Trait: Their decorative, spiked shells vary in pattern and color, making each individual unique.

Tank Mates

Horn Snails are peaceful and compatible with most tank inhabitants:

  • Safe Companions: Small fish, shrimp, and other peaceful invertebrates.
  • Avoid: Aggressive or predatory species like large cichlids or loaches that may harm the snails.

Breeding

Breeding Horn Snails in freshwater is rare, as they require brackish water for successful reproduction.

Reproductive Behavior

  • Horn Snails lay small, white eggs on hard surfaces such as rocks or glass.
  • Eggs do not hatch in freshwater conditions.
  • In brackish water, larvae develop into free-swimming planktonic stages before settling.

Key Notes

  • Algae Control: Horn Snails are highly effective at controlling algae but will not harm plants.
  • Shell Health: Provide a calcium-rich diet and maintain stable water parameters to prevent shell erosion.
  • Tank Lid: Ensure a tight-fitting lid, as they may climb out of the tank.

The Horn Snail (Clithon corona) is a practical and decorative addition to aquariums, combining algae-eating functionality with an aesthetically striking appearance. Its low-maintenance care and compatibility with a variety of setups make it an excellent choice for aquarists looking to enhance both the beauty and cleanliness of their tank.
