Lamp Eyes (Aplocheilichthys normani)

The Lamp Eye, also known as the Norman’s Lampeye Killifish, is a small, peaceful freshwater fish notable for its shimmering blue eyes that glow under the right lighting conditions. Native to West Africa, this species thrives in densely planted aquariums with calm tank mates. Its schooling behavior, combined with its glowing eyes, makes it a stunning addition to nano or community tanks.

Natural Habitat

Lamp Eyes are found in slow-moving rivers, streams, and floodplains in West Africa, particularly in Guinea, Nigeria, and Cameroon. These waters are soft, warm, and heavily vegetated, providing ample cover and food.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 liters for a group of 6–10 individuals.
  • Water Temperature: 22–28°C.
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5.
  • Water Hardness: 2–10 dGH (soft to moderately soft water).
  • Filtration: Gentle flow; they prefer calm waters similar to their natural habitat.

Aquascaping

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel.
  • Decor: Include driftwood, rocks, and caves for structure.
  • Plants: Dense vegetation with species like Java Moss, Hornwort, Cryptocoryne, and floating plants such as Duckweed or Salvinia provides shade and cover.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting enhances the glow of their iridescent eyes.

Tank Mates

Lamp Eyes are peaceful and do well in community aquariums with other small, gentle species. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Small tetras, rasboras, and dwarf corydoras.
  • Shrimp species like cherry shrimp or Amano shrimp.
Avoid: Larger, aggressive, or fast-moving fish that may intimidate or outcompete them.

Feeding

Lamp Eyes are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet:

  • Staple Foods: High-quality micro-pellets or flakes suitable for small fish.
  • Protein: Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasionally offer blanched spinach or spirulina-based foods.
Feed 1–2 times daily, ensuring food reaches all individuals in the group.

Behavior and Personality

  • Activity: Lamp Eyes are active swimmers and spend most of their time in the mid-to-upper water column.
  • Social Behavior: They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6–10 to feel secure and exhibit natural behaviors.
  • Calm Demeanor: Their peaceful nature makes them an excellent choice for community tanks.

Breeding

Breeding Lamp Eyes is relatively simple with proper conditions.

Sexing

  • Males: Slightly slimmer and more vibrant coloration, particularly during spawning.
  • Females: Rounder body, especially when carrying eggs.

Breeding Tank Setup

  • Use a separate breeding tank of at least 20 liters with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.5).
  • Include fine-leafed plants like Java Moss or spawning mops for egg deposition.

Breeding Process

  1. Condition the adults with live or frozen foods.
  2. Males display to females to initiate spawning.
  3. Eggs are scattered on plants or substrate and hatch within 10–14 days.

Fry Care

  • Feed fry with infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
  • Transition to baby brine shrimp or finely crushed flakes as they grow.

Key Notes

  • Behavior: Lamp Eyes are shy and benefit from a heavily planted tank with plenty of hiding spots.
  • Water Quality: Regular water changes and stable conditions are essential for their health and vibrant appearance.
  • Tank Lid: A secure lid is recommended, as they are prone to jumping.

The Lamp Eye (Aplocheilichthys normani) is a captivating fish for aquarists seeking a peaceful, low-maintenance species with unique visual appeal. Their shimmering eyes, schooling nature, and gentle temperament make them a delightful addition to nano or community aquariums.
