The Amano Shrimp is one of the best algae-eating shrimp for freshwater aquariums. They are hardy, active, and excellent for community tanks, making them a popular choice for both beginner and experienced shrimp keepers.

Quick Facts:

  • Scientific Name: Caridina multidentata
  • Common Name: Amano Shrimp, Yamato Shrimp
  • Origin: Japan, Taiwan, China
  • Size: 4–6 cm (larger than most dwarf shrimp)
  • Lifespan: 2–5 years
  • Temperament: Peaceful, social
  • Difficulty Level: Easy

Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: 20+ litres (best in 40+ litres for groups)
  • Temperature: 18–28°C
  • pH Range: 6.5–7.5
  • Water Hardness: 6–12 dGH
  • Filtration: Sponge filters or gentle-flow filters work best.
  • Substrate & Decorations:
    • Fine gravel or sand substrate.
    • Live plants (Java Fern, Anubias, Vallisneria, Mosses) provide cover and help maintain water quality.
    • Driftwood and rocks for natural biofilm growth.

Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Very active and always grazing on algae, biofilm, and leftover food.
  • Best kept in groups of 3–5+ for natural social behavior.
  • Compatible Tank Mates:
    • Peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, danios, gouramis, and corydoras.
    • Other shrimp species like Neocaridina (Cherry Shrimp, Blue Dream) and Bamboo Shrimp.
    • Snails like Nerite Snails and Mystery Snails.
  • Avoid aggressive fish like cichlids, bettas, and large barbs.

Diet

Amano Shrimp are omnivores and fantastic algae eaters, but they need supplemental feeding:

  • Algae & Biofilm (their natural diet).
  • High-quality Shrimp Pellets & Algae Wafers.
  • Blanched Vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber).
  • Protein Treats (bloodworms, brine shrimp occasionally).

Breeding

  • Difficult in home aquariums because larvae require brackish water to survive.
  • Females carry eggs, but hatchlings won’t develop in freshwater.
  • Breeding requires specialized setups with salinity adjustments.

Care Tips

Keep stable water parameters. Avoid sudden changes.
Regular water changes (10–20% weekly).
Avoid copper-based medications (toxic to shrimp).
Provide natural grazing surfaces (live plants, driftwood).
