Native to Southeast Asia, this schooling species is perfect for community aquariums and planted tanks. Its small size, hardy nature, and engaging behavior make it an excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels.
Natural Habitat
Eyespot Rasboras are found in slow-moving streams, rivers, and swampy areas across Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. These waters are warm, acidic, and densely vegetated, offering ample cover and food sources.
Aquarium Care
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 40 liters for a group of 6–8 individuals.
- Water Temperature: 22–28°C.
- pH Range: 5.5–7.0 (soft, slightly acidic water preferred).
- Water Hardness: 1–10 dGH (soft to moderately soft water).
- Filtration: Gentle flow; sponge filters or low-flow external filters are ideal.
Aquascaping
- Substrate: Sand or fine gravel to mimic their natural environment.
- Decor: Driftwood, rocks, and leaf litter create hiding spots and replicate their habitat.
- Plants: Heavily planted tanks with species like Java Moss, Cryptocoryne, and floating plants such as Duckweed or Salvinia provide shade and security.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting enhances their natural coloration and minimizes stress.
Tank Mates
Eyespot Rasboras are peaceful and do well in community aquariums with similarly gentle species. Suitable companions include:
- Other small rasboras, tetras, or pencilfish.
- Bottom-dwellers like pygmy Corydoras or small shrimp species.
Avoid: Large or aggressive fish that may intimidate or outcompete them.
Feeding
Eyespot Rasboras are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet:
- Staple Foods: High-quality micro-pellets or finely crushed flakes suitable for small fish.
- Protein: Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae.
- Vegetable Matter: Occasionally include spirulina-based foods or finely chopped blanched vegetables.
Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions to ensure all fish can feed.
Behavior and Personality
- Activity: Active swimmers that occupy the mid-to-upper water column.
- Social Behavior: They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.
- Temperament: Peaceful and shy, they thrive in a calm, well-planted environment.
Breeding
Breeding Eyespot Rasboras in captivity is possible with proper care and setup.
Sexing
- Males: More vibrant coloration and slightly slimmer bodies.
- Females: Rounder bodies, especially when carrying eggs, with slightly duller coloration.
Breeding Tank Setup
- A separate breeding tank of 20 liters with soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5) is recommended.
- Include fine-leafed plants or spawning mops for egg deposition.
Breeding Process
- Condition the breeding pair with live or frozen foods.
- Males court females with displays of vibrant coloration and fin movements.
- Eggs are scattered on plants or substrate and hatch within 24–36 hours.
Fry Care
- Feed fry infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
- Transition to baby brine shrimp or powdered fry food as they grow.
Key Notes
- Water Quality: Regular water changes and stable parameters are crucial to maintaining their health and vibrant appearance.
- Behavior: They appreciate heavily planted tanks with subdued lighting and plenty of hiding spots.
- Group Size: Keeping them in larger groups enhances their schooling behavior and reduces shyness.
The Eyespot Rasbora (Brevibora dorsiocellata) is a delightful addition to peaceful community aquariums, offering shimmering colors and engaging social behaviors. Its manageable size, adaptability, and unique markings make it a favorite among aquarists looking to create a serene and visually stunning aquatic setup.
