The Golden Marble Angelfish is a stunning variant of the freshwater angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare. Native to the slow-moving waters of the Amazon River Basin, this angelfish thrives in well-planted tanks and is loved by aquarists for its vibrant appearance and adaptable nature.

Natural Habitat

In their natural environment, angelfish inhabit calm, soft, and slightly acidic waters with dense vegetation. They can often be found among submerged roots, driftwood, and plants, which provide shelter and spawning sites.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75 liters for a pair or small group. Larger tanks are preferred for better swimming space and to reduce territorial disputes.
  • Water Temperature: 24–28°C.
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5.
  • Water Hardness: 3–10 dGH (soft to slightly hard water).
  • Filtration: Moderate flow with efficient filtration to maintain water quality.

Aquascaping

  • Use a soft substrate like sand or fine gravel.
  • Add tall plants such as Amazon Sword, Vallisneria, or Anubias to replicate their natural habitat.
  • Include driftwood and decorative rocks to provide hiding spaces and a natural aesthetic.
  • Maintain moderate lighting for a balanced, calming environment.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible with peaceful fish such as rummy nose tetras, rasboras, and corydoras.
  • Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species like tiger barbs or large cichlids.

Feeding

Golden Marble Angelfish are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet:

  • Staple Foods: High-quality flakes, cichlid pellets, or granules.
  • Protein: Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
  • Plant-Based: Occasionally offer blanched vegetables like spinach or spirulina-based foods.
Feed 1–2 times daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes.

Breeding

Breeding Golden Marble Angelfish can be rewarding for dedicated aquarists:

Pair Formation

  • Pairs typically form naturally in groups.
  • Males and females can be distinguished by slight differences in body shape and fin structure, with males often having more elongated dorsal fins.

Breeding Tank Setup

  • Use a tank of at least 40 liters with a water temperature of 27–28°C.
  • Include flat surfaces such as slate or broad-leaf plants for egg-laying.

Spawning and Egg Care

  • During spawning, the female lays rows of eggs on the chosen surface, which the male fertilizes.
  • Both parents often guard the eggs, but in community tanks, it’s best to remove them to a separate tank to prevent predation.
  • Eggs hatch in 2–3 days, and fry become free-swimming in about a week.

Feeding Fry

  • Start with freshly hatched brine shrimp or liquid fry food.
  • Gradually introduce finely crushed flakes as they grow.

Key Notes

  • Behavior: Semi-aggressive, especially during breeding. Provide ample space to reduce territorial disputes.
  • Water Quality: Regular water changes are essential for maintaining health and vibrant coloration.
  • Health: Watch for signs of common diseases like ich or fin rot; maintain proper water parameters and a nutritious diet for optimal health.

Golden Marble Angelfish are a visually striking and rewarding addition to medium or large aquariums. Their dazzling patterns, graceful movements, and ease of care make them a favorite among aquarists of all levels.
