Strawberry Rasbora (Boraras naevus)

The Strawberry Rasbora is a tiny, vibrant freshwater fish known for its bright reddish-pink coloration and peaceful demeanor. Native to slow-moving streams and swamps in Thailand and Malaysia, this species is perfect for nano aquariums and aquascaped tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Grows up to 2 cm (0.8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: Pinkish-red body with a distinct black spot near the base of the caudal fin. Males are more intensely colored than females, especially during courtship.
  • Body Shape: Slender and torpedo-shaped with translucent fins.

Behavior and Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Peaceful and shy, best kept in groups of 8 or more to encourage natural behaviors and reduce stress.
  • Tankmates: Ideal companions for other small, peaceful species like ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, and dwarf shrimp. Avoid larger or aggressive fish that might intimidate or eat them.
  • Social Behavior: Shoaling fish that thrive in the company of their own kind.

Habitat Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a group, with larger tanks preferred for bigger schools.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22°C–28°C (72°F–82°F).
    • pH: 4.5–7.0 (prefers slightly acidic conditions).
    • Hardness: Very soft to soft water (1–10 dGH).
  • Substrate: Fine sand or dark gravel to mimic natural habitats.
  • Environment:
    • Dense planting with fine-leaved plants like Java moss and Rotala.
    • Floating plants to diffuse lighting and create shaded areas.
    • Use driftwood and leaf litter to replicate tannin-rich waters.

Diet:

  • Carnivorous: Prefers a diet of tiny live or frozen foods, such as:
    • Daphnia
    • Baby brine shrimp
    • Micro worms
  • Accepts high-quality micro-pellets or crushed flakes, though live foods help enhance their coloration.

Care Tips:

  1. Keep in heavily planted aquariums with low light to mimic their natural habitat.
  2. Ensure consistent water quality with frequent, small water changes.
  3. Maintain a calm environment with minimal flow to accommodate their preference for slow-moving waters.

Breeding:

  • Reproduction: Egg scatterers; males court females with vibrant displays.
  • Setup: Use a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for egg attachment.
  • Egg Care: Adults do not guard eggs, so remove them after spawning to prevent predation. Eggs hatch within 24–48 hours.
  • Fry Diet: Feed infusoria or powdered fry food initially, transitioning to baby brine shrimp as they grow.

The Strawberry Rasbora is a visually stunning and peaceful fish, perfect for nano aquariums and aquascapes. Its small size and vibrant colors make it a delightful choice for aquarists seeking a unique, low-maintenance addition to their tank.
