The Koi Angelfish is a beautiful freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and patterns reminiscent of koi carp. With its white or gold body accented by bright orange and black markings, this angelfish is a popular choice among aquarists. Native to the Amazon River Basin, this Pterophyllum scalare variety thrives in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of swimming space and a peaceful environment.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, angelfish inhabit slow-moving or still waters such as floodplains, streams, and river basins. These areas are often filled with soft, acidic water, abundant plants, and submerged roots, creating ideal shelter and breeding conditions.

Aquarium Care

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75 liters for a pair; larger tanks recommended for groups.
  • Water Temperature: 24–28°C.
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5.
  • Water Hardness: 3–10 dGH (soft to slightly hard water).
  • Filtration: Moderate flow with efficient biological filtration.

Aquascaping

  • Use soft sand or fine gravel as substrate.
  • Include tall plants like Amazon Swords, Vallisneria, or Java Fern for vertical cover.
  • Add driftwood and smooth rocks to replicate their natural environment.
  • Moderate lighting enhances their vibrant colors and keeps stress levels low.

Tank Mates

  • Ideal tank mates include peaceful species like neon tetras, corydoras, and dwarf gouramis.
  • Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs or overly aggressive fish.

Feeding

Koi Angelfish are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet:

  • Staple Foods: High-quality flakes or granules designed for cichlids.
  • Live/Frozen Foods: Brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
  • Vegetables: Blanched spinach or spirulina-based foods for added nutrition.
Feed small portions 1–2 times daily to prevent overfeeding.

Breeding

Breeding Koi Angelfish is similar to other angelfish varieties and can be achieved in a well-maintained aquarium.

Pair Formation

  • Pairs often form naturally in groups of six or more juveniles.
  • Males typically have more pointed dorsal fins, while females may appear rounder.

Breeding Tank Setup

  • Use a separate breeding tank of at least 40 liters with stable conditions:
    • Temperature: 27–28°C.
    • pH: 6.5–7.0.
  • Provide flat surfaces such as slate, smooth rocks, or broad-leaf plants for egg-laying.

Spawning and Egg Care

  • The female lays rows of eggs, which the male fertilizes.
  • Both parents may guard the eggs and fry; however, it’s advisable to remove the eggs or fry to a separate tank in community setups.
  • Eggs hatch in 2–3 days, and fry become free-swimming in 5–7 days.

Fry Feeding

  • Start with freshly hatched brine shrimp or commercial fry food.
  • Gradually introduce crushed flakes or micro-pellets as the fry grow.

Key Notes

  • Behavior: Semi-aggressive, particularly when breeding. Provide adequate space and hiding spots.
  • Water Maintenance: Perform weekly water changes to maintain pristine conditions.
  • Health: Monitor for common ailments like fin rot or ich; a varied diet and clean water will help keep them healthy.

Koi Angelfish are a visually stunning and manageable choice for aquarists. Their bold colors, peaceful temperament, and adaptability make them an excellent addition to medium or large aquariums, perfect for beginners and seasoned aquarists alike.
